US Open - Djokovic geeft na uitschakeling tegen Alcaraz jacht op 25e grandslamtitel niet op

"Ik geef de Grand Slams niet op en blijf vechten", zei Djokovic. "Het zal wel erg moeilijk worden om de 'obstakels' te overwinnen", doelde hij op Jannik Sinner en Carlos Alcaraz, die momenteel boven de concurrentie uitsteken. "Ik wil volgend seizoen nog steeds alle Grand Slams spelen. Het zijn toernooien die anders zijn dan andere en de pijlers van onze sport."

Djokovic veroverde viermaal de eindzege in Flushing Meadows (in 2011, 2015, 2018 en 2023). De overwinning in 2023 in New York is zijn laatste grandslamzege. Dit seizoen haalde hij op elke Grand Slam de halve finales. "Ik ben tevreden over mijn tennisniveau, maar het is ook een kwestie van fysieke conditie. Ik heb me voorgenomen dat ik mijn best zou doen om mijn lichaam in vorm te brengen om dit niveau en dit tempo zo lang als nodig vol te houden. Maar dat was nu niet genoeg. Dat is iets waar ik op dit moment in mijn carrière helaas geen controle over heb", klonk het nog na de nederlaag tegen Alcaraz.

WK mountainbike - Wout Alleman haalt top tien in loodzware marathon

Op de wereldkampioenschappen mountainbike in het Zwitserse Valais is beste Belg Wout Alleman zaterdag negende geworden op het WK in de marathon. Na een lange tocht door de Alpen eindigde de West-Vlaming op acht minuten van de nieuwe wereldkampioen, de Amerikaan Keegan Swenson.
