WTA Guadalajara - Topreekshoofd Elise Mertens viert in Mexico rentree na US Open

Mertens is als topreekshoofd vrij in de eerste ronde en komt in de tweede ronde (achtste finales) uit tegen de Griekse Maria Sakkari (WTA 64), de winnares van het toernooi in 2023, of de Française Elsa Jacquemot (WTA 91). De 29-jarige Limburgse neemt voor de derde keer in haar carrière deel aan het Mexicaanse hardcourttoernooi. Bij haar twee eerdere deelnames in 2022 en 2023, toen het nog een WTA 1.000-toernooi betrof, strandde ze in de tweede ronde. De Poolse Magdalena Frech (WTA 33) is de titelverdedigster.

Mertens is de enige landgenote op de enkeltabel in Guadalajara en komt er voor het eerst in actie sinds ze vorige week op de US Open in de derde ronde werd uitgeschakeld door de Spaanse Cristina Bucsa (WTA 95). Aan de zijde van de Russin Veronika Kudermetova (WTA 25), die in Mexico het tweede reekshoofd vormt, sneuvelde ze in de halve finales van het dubbelspel in New York.
