WK mountainbike - Wout Alleman haalt top tien in loodzware marathon

Het WK op de lange afstand zorgde voor adembenemende beelden hoog in het Zwitserse gebergte. In een loodzware opdracht, goed voor vijfduizend hoogtemeter op een afstand van 125 kilometer, ging gravelspecialist Swenson in de finale alleen naar de leiding. Hij haalde het na zes uur met 25 seconden voorsprong voor de Italiaan Samuele Porro en 3:42 voor de Colombiaan Hector Leonardo Paez.

De 29-jarige Alleman, die eerder dit jaar dagsuccessen boekte in de iconische Cape Epic en in de Wereldbeker in de marathon, fietste een groot deel van de dag in de top tien, uiteindelijk goed voor de negende plaats. Frans Claes werd negentiende op 14 minuten, Wout Janssen 26e op 20 minuten en Simon Grégoire 39e op 33 minuten.

Kate Courtney zorgde voor een dubbel bij de Amerikanen: de crosscountryspecialiste pakte de wereldtitel bij de vrouwen na een lange solo en een koers van meer dan zeven uur. De Zwitserse Anna Weinbeer werd tweede op 3:44, de Oostenrijkse Mona Mitterwallner derde op vijf minuten. De 21-jarige Julia Grégoire, de enige Belgische, eindigde na ruim acht uur als 23e.
