Twintig maanden schorsing voor Canadese polsstokspringster die olympisch brons won

De 31-jarige Newman krijgt de straf omdat ze in een periode van twaalf maanden drie keer in de fout ging met haar whereabouts. Ze miste vorig jaar controles op 3 februari, 17 en 23 augustus. Haar schorsing geldt met terugwerkende kracht vanaf 3 december 2025. Sinds begin februari was ze al voorlopig geschorst.

Newman pakte in de zomer van 2024 met een nationaal record van 4m85 de bronzen medaille op de Olympische Spelen in Parijs. Daarnaast eindigde ze ook al twee keer in de top acht op het WK outdoor (vijfde in 2019 en zevende in 2017) en werd ze in 2018 zesde op het WK indoor. Sinds de Diamond League-meeting van eind mei 2025 in het Marokkaanse Rabat, waar ze tiende werd, kwam de zesvoudige Canadese kampioene niet meer in actie.

Dani Carvajal heeft een teen in zijn rechtervoet gebroken, zo bevestigt Real Madrid zaterdag. De 34-jarige rechtsachter zou volgens Spaanse media een paar weken buiten strijd zijn. Mogelijk raakt hij dus nog fit voor het competitieslot in La Liga.

De gewezen Formule 1-rijder en later meervoudig paralympisch kampioen Alessandro Zanardi is op 59-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat maakte zijn familie zaterdag bekend.
