WK 2026 - Portugese spelers eren Diogo Jota met speciale polsbandjes

"We waarderen dit enorm", zei Vitinha tijdens de eerste persconferentie in het Portugese basiskamp in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida. De premier heeft de spelers "de keuze gelaten of en hoe we het willen dragen". Volgens de middenvelder van Paris Saint-Germain hebben alle spelers van bondscoach Roberto Martinez (ex-Rode Duivels) samen besloten om de armbandjes gedurende het hele toernooi te dragen, zowel op training als tijdens de wedstrijden.

Diogo Jota overleed in de ochtend van 3 juli 2025 op 28-jarige leeftijd bij een verkeersongeval in Spanje samen met zijn jongere broer André Silva (25), ook profvoetballer bij Penafiel in de Portugese tweede klasse. Twee weken voor het ongeval was hij nog in het huwelijksbootje gestapt met zijn partner Rute Cardoso, de moeder van zijn drie kinderen.

ATP Queen's - Alexander Blockx geeft forfait voor Londens grastoernooi

Alexander Blockx (ATP-37) zal deze week dan toch niet deelnemen aan het ATP-toernooi in Queen's (2.583.330 euro). Elke speler op het WK heeft zo zijn verhaal over de weg naar de top van het voetbal. Bij sommigen verliep dat al wat minder over de geëffende paden dan bij anderen. Zo is er de Australiër Nestory Irankunda, doelpuntenmaker en Man van de Match bij de openingswedstrijd van de Socceroos tegen Turkije. Hij werd 20 jaar geleden geboren in een vluchtelingenkamp in Tanzania.
