Copa Sudamericana - Independiente uitgesloten van verdere deelname na supportersgeweld

De terugwedstrijd in de achtste finales moest op 20 augustus na 48 minuten bij een 1-1-stand definitief stopgezet worden vanwege supportersgeweld op de tribunes. De Chileense fans zouden daarbij projectielen gegooid hebben naar de thuisfans, waarna Argentijnen het uitvak bestormden. Er vielen meerdere gewonden en een honderdtal arrestaties werd verricht.

Independiente moet na de rellen ook zijn volgende veertien wedstrijden in de CONMEBOL-toernooien zonder supporters afwerken en een boete van 250.000 dollar betalen, naast andere sancties. Universidad de Chile stoot door naar de kwartfinales, waar het de Peruaanse club Alianza Lima zal ontmoeten. De Chileense club moet een boete van 270.000 dollar betalen en mag tijdens de komende veertien internationale wedstrijden geen supporters toelaten.

Deze beslissing, waartegen beroep kan worden aangetekend, voorziet in strengere sancties bij nieuwe incidenten en verplicht beide teams om op sociale media en in hun stadions campagnes te voeren tegen racisme, discriminatie en geweld.
